​Environmental Health is a Division of County of Placer Health & Human Services.

Environmental Health specialists regularly monitor and inspect the below for health and safety standards:
  • Restaurants, food trucks, grocery stores, convenience stores, caterers and food vendors at community events
  • Public swimming pools, spas and body art facilities
  • Landfills, transfer stations, and facilities storing waste tires
  • Gas stations, vehicle repair shops and other commercial facilities that store and dispose of hazardous materials like oil, gasoline and diesel
  • Water well installations
  • Septic system installations
  • Contaminated site clean ups
  • Small public water suppliers

Environmental Health also responds to and investigates incidents and complaints regarding:
  • Chemical spills
  • Food poisoning
  • Garbage
  • Public pools or spas
  • Restaurants and other food facilities
  • Sewage on the ground
  • Sub-standard housing
  • Tattoo or body art shops

CalFresh is a food supplement program, formerly known as Food Stamps or SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program), that helps qualified individuals obtain nutritious food.

ELIGIBILITY 
Many CalFresh customers work and are considered low income. Others may be unable to work due to lack of work or inability to work; individuals receiving Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI and SSD), and Social Security are eligible for CalFresh. Individuals receiving or authorized to receive SSI/SSP (Supplemental Security Income/State Supplemental Payment) are eligible for CalFresh, provided all other eligibility criteria are met. 

Even if temporary, individuals and families who have experienced a change in their circumstances due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and need additional help, may apply for CalFresh. Californians can visit GetCalFresh.org to apply or call 877-847-3663 (FOOD) to be connected to their local county social service office.

The Emergency Day Respite Center provides:
  • Warm meals
  • Showers
  • Laundry
  • Health "check-in"
  • Access to counseling, community, and basic necessities
  • Longer-term support when possible

  • Unopened travel size shampoo, conditioner, body wash, soap, and/or hand cream
  • Disinfectant wipes and Lysol spray
  • Backpacks
  • Individually wrapped Grab & Go food items such as granola bars, cookies, beef jerky, fruit cups, and/or other items

Down the street and in your neighborhood, the American Red Cross of Northern Nevada responds to disasters and emergencies both large and small to those displaced by earthquakes, wildfires, floods, home and apartment fires, gas leaks, or windstorms; delivers preparedness, health & safety courses including CPR and First Aid certification; and, provides Services to the Armed Forces for members of the military and their families.

If someone knows for certain the they have lost their home in a disaster, t
hey can call 844-236-0153 any time 24/7 to let American Red Cross know. ARC can open a case file and there may be resources available through ARC to help.

In the event of disasters and emergencies, the Animal Control department of the Nevada County Sheriff's Office oversees animal evacuation.

Animal Evacuation information is event specific. Details will come from the Nevada County Office of Emergency Services. Though animal evac may be at the Nevada County fairgrounds, it may somewhere else if, for example, there is an event underway at the fairgrounds.
