Partners in English Langulage Learning (PiELL) provides free one-on-one tutoring of ESL to non-native speakers in Nevada County. All tutors are volunteers which PiELL trains to teach ESL. They offer a two day training session three times a year.

Lost in a Crowd? This is how hundreds of Western Nevada County Residents with limited English language skills feel when making medical appointments, speaking to doctors and nurses, talking to their children’s teachers, filling out job applications, asking for directions, or reading labels. These hard-working and motivated people represent a growing number of adults living in the community who want to learn or improve their English speaking, understanding, reading, and writing skills. Miracle Flights provides financial assistance for medical air transportation allowing children under 17 years old access to specialized medical treatment and second opinions throughout the United States. Provides air travel via commercial airlines so that children may access specialized, out-of-state medical care and second opinions. Flight assistance is also provided for parents/legal guardians traveling with the patient. Assistance for adult patients may be available based on funding.

The Petal Connection is an incredible group of volunteers who deliver joy to hospice patients and seniors in our community. Flowers are repurposed to create colorful bedside bouquets using flowers and vases that are donated from local grocers, florists, local floral growers, corporate events, weddings, and community members. Donated flowers are lovingly arranged into beautiful bouquets and delivered to those who need them the most! Such a simple gesture makes a big difference in our community. Spreading kindness . . . one petal at a time!

Interfaith Food Ministry provides supplemental groceries, including baby formula and baby food when available, to low-income individuals and families.

People needing free supplemental groceries are allowed to come to IFM once every other week.

Food Distribution

  • When? Every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 10am-1pm. Also, every Saturday from 10am-1pm in collaboration with United Way of Nevada County.

  • Monday, Wednesday, Friday: 10-11:30am - Reservations Only.
    11:30am-1pm First come, first served.
  • Saturday: 10am-12pm - No Reservations. First come, first served.
  • Make reservations on the IFM Portal.

Free Phones

Free phones (also known as lifeline phones or Obama phones) are available at Saturday food distributions for eligible low-income Nevada County residents. Eligibility is based on income. For example, people who receive CalFresh/EBT and Medi-Cal are eligible. Expect to present proof of income and have a photo ID.
