CalWORKs & Employment Services are a part of Human Services, one of six Divisions of County of Placer Health & Human Services.

If you are an adult with dependent children, you may be eligible for California Work Opportunity and Responsibility to Kids, or CalWORKs. CalWORKs provides:
  • Child care, work expense assistance, transportation, and counseling
  • Education, employment and training programs through Employment Services
  • Families with children financial assistance to meet their basic needs
  • Support for families moving toward self-sufficiency
If you are eligible for CalWORKs you will automatically qualify for Medi-Cal and may also qualify for CalFresh. Unless you are exempt, you will be referred to the Employment Services program for assistance gaining employment. CalWORKs is a public assistance program that provides cash aid and services to eligible families that have a child(ren) in the home. The program serves all 58 counties in the state and is operated locally by county welfare departments.

The County of Placer has CalWORKs offices in Auburn, Rocklin, and Carnelian Bay (Tahoe).

If a family has little or no cash and needs housing, food, utilities, clothing or medical care, they may be eligible to receive immediate short-term help. Families that apply and qualify for ongoing assistance receive money each month to help pay for housing, food and other necessary expenses.

The amount of a family‘s monthly assistance payment depends on a number of factors, including the number of people who are eligible and the special needs of any of those family members. The income of the family is considered in calculating the amount of cash aid the family receives.

Vouchers for reduced fees for California ID cards are available for people receiving Nevada County welfare assistance programs (veterans, eligibility & employment, Adult Services or Child Welfare assistance programs).
 
Go to one of the three Nevada County Department of Social Services offices and ask for a voucher. A county worker must sign the voucher. People who are homeless and on public assistance are eligible to receive a free ID card. This does not replace drivers licenses, only identification cards.

The Nevada County Department of Social Services offers a supplemental assistance program for people who are ineligible for aid under any federal or state program which is designed to meet all of the applicant/recipient's needs, such as CalWORKS, or the Supplemental Security Income/State Supplementary Payment (SSI/SSP). It is, in large part, an emergency assistance program to be used when other resources are not available or cannot be developed to meet the needs of the applicant(s). General Assistance is a repayable grant, not an entitlement program.

The Native TANF Program provides TANF (Temporary Assistance for Needy Families) to eligible families. To be eligible for Native TANF the family must have at least one child in the home who is able to provide documentation that he/she is a member or a descendant of a federally recognized tribe or a descendant of the California Judgment Roll.

Temporary Financial Assistance
CalWORKs is a temporary financial assistance program for low- or no- income families with children. It can help all kinds of families who have fallen on hard times due to a variety of issues such as fleeing domestic violence, illness or death of an income earner, substance use, child behavior or developmental challenges, homelessness, legal or criminal record constraints, or job loss. 

Employment Services

Drop-in benefits information and application assistance is provided by the Navigator team from the Nevada County Department of Social Services at three libraries each month. Stop by if you need help enrolling in, or renewing your participation in, benefits programs such as
