The Fire Safe Council of Nevada County offers brush Chipping Program that has been cleared from defensible space of any permanent structure, and/or 30 feet from any roadside or driveway used for evacuation purposes.

Wait time for this service can be weeks or months. The chipping service is limited to 4 hours per customer per application for $75/hour. A limited number of applications may qualify for free chipping services based on income, age, and/or disability.

If you are having a life-threatening emergency call 9-1-1. For example, if you have lost power to essential life-sustaining medical devices and do not have backup power for them, or you have a medical need for temperature control.

FREED works with the California Foundation for Independent Living Centers (CFILC) and PG&E to support people with disabilities and older adults during a Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS) event or other emergencies due to power shutoffs. The goal is to enable them to remain safe while independent in their residences and communities.

Funding for some services listed below is ONLY for PSPS events (or other power outage events for which PG&E may activate FREED). There is no funding for generators. No generators are available through any of these programs.

FREED provides assistance in finding accessible and affordable housing.

Services include:

  • Help in developing housing search strategies
  • Information about Section 8 and other subsidized and low income housing
  • Information and referrals to other community housing resources
  • Help in filling out apartment application forms
  • Assistance in understanding your housing rights as a person with a disability

FREED also offers a weekly Housing Club that provides information, resources and assistance for seniors and people with disabilities (any age) seeking support finding housing.

The Housing Club meets every Monday from 2-4pm. No appointment is needed.

Nevada County Now provides para-transit and senior on-demand dial-a-rides for eligible residents of Nevada County. Services are available in Grass Valley, Nevada City, Penn Valley, Lake Wildwood, and other local areas.

Services include:

  • Paratransit: Door-to-door service for persons with disabilities who cannot use the fixed-route bus system due to a mental or physical disability. Eligibility requires completing an ADA application and certification.
    • Same-Day On-Demand Services: Available to eligible disabled community members and seniors 65 and older.
    • Beyond ADA Service: Limited service up to 3/4 of a mile beyond the mandated ADA service area, prioritized for medical appointments. Must be ADA certified.
  • Senior On-Demand Dial-a-Ride: Available for residents aged 65 and older in Western Nevada County. Requires age verification and a completed application form. Trips are provided based on available capacity, with ADA-mandated paratransit trips taking priority.

Seniors First offers Meals on Wheels and Senior Cafes.

Meals on Wheels

A service designed to help Older Adults Age in Place by targeting people who are home alone during the day and who have difficulty preparing simple meals. For clients who need the service temporarily.

Eligibility

At the time services are provided, clients shall be:

  • 62 years of age or older, sufficiently functionally impaired and homebound; or,
  • The spouse, of any age, of an eligible client; or,
  • A person with a disability (of any age) who lives with an eligible client.

Senior Cafés

The Senior Cafés program provides a hot, healthy lunch five days a week to seniors age 60 at over eight Senior Café locations throughout Placer County including Auburn, Lincoln, Rocklin and Roseville. The Senior Cafés are lively gathering places that help maintain clients' sense of community and connectedness.

Cost

Meals are provided for a small optional contribution. No one is ever turned away for lack of financial resources.

Medi-Cal offers medical, dental, vision and mental health care to eligible individuals and families at little or no cost.
