Homeland Return 2024The Nevada City Rancheria Nisenan Tribe has a time-limited opportunity to purchase 232 acres located on a historic Nisenan Village site called Yulića near Nevada City - what is currently known as Woolman.
As of January 8, 2024, CHIRP deposited $75,000 into an escrow account to acquire Woolman as a land base for the Tribe. CHIRP has until April 4th, 2024 to raise the additional $1.5 million to purchase the property, with a total fundraising goal of $2.4 million for the purchase price, government required improvements, and an operating endowment.
This is the Tribe’s best opportunity to re-establish a homeland in more than half a century, and they are seeking community financial help to make it happen.

The California Heritage: Indigenous Research Project (CHIRP) is guided by the Nevada City Rancheria Tribal Council. Over the years, the organization has grown in focus and capacity to better serve the Tribe’s goals and needs. Because the Nevada City Rancheria is no longer recognized by the United States, Tribal members are denied access to the federal Indian programs created to support their health, education, housing and economic stability. With financial and community support, CHIRP seeks to “creatively mimic” programs that will support the preservation, protection and perpetuation of the Nisenan people and their culture into the future, while advocating for the restoration of the Nevada City Rancheria’s federal recognition.
