The California Department of Social Services (CDSS) administers the Safely Surrendered Baby Law, which allows a parent or legal guardian to surrender an infant confidentially and without fear of prosecution, as long as the child has not been abused or neglected.

Babies can be surrendered within 72 hours of birth at designated safe surrender sites, which may include hospitals or fire stations approved by the county.

Services include:

  • Legal surrender of newborns up to 72 hours old
  • Designated safe surrender sites (such as hospitals & fire stations)
  • Confidential process that protects parental identity
  • Information about county-level participation and signage

Additional notes:

Signs at safe surrender sites display the blue and white baby logo. CDSS oversees the program statewide, but individual counties manage local sites.
